The sounds are an eclectic collection of percussion instruments from around the world, making it possible to play and experiment across many genres of music. It’s possible to overdub with up to three different drum kits from the internal memory. The Phrase Loop feature enables you to record your performances in real time, and then overdub on top of your recorded phrases. You can play the SPD-30 on its own, integrate it into an existing electronic drum kit or a DJ rig, and with Roland’s RT series of triggers, you can even use acoustic drums to trigger the Octapad (the RT-105S on snare, RT-10K on kick and RT-10T on toms). The display is built tough for percussion, so it can survive being whacked with a stick, over and over again. A large backlit LCD display makes carrying out tasks with the instrument a lot easier such as editing the tone, pitch and muffling of a sound. Every pad features an activity light, which provides useful visual feedback to the user.

The pads on the SPD-30 are very responsive and offer a natural playing feel, and as they’re all physically separated, there are no issues with crosstalk. A second USB port enables you to attach flash memory drives to back up your phrase data.

In addition to playing its internal sounds, the SPD-30 can be used to trigger external modules, or it can exchange MIDI notes with an attached computer via USB.

It’s possible to attach four more trigger pads to the SPD-30, and with its dedicated hi-hat controller, it can act as a full drum kit by adding some Roland V-Pads and cymbals.
